The Peruvian Primera División ( English: First Division) is the top professional division of Peruvian football. It is known today as Torneo Descentralizado de Fútbol Profesional Peruano (English: Professional Decentralized Football Tournament) or Campeonato Nacional (English: National Championship). It has been referred to as Descentralizado since 1966, when the first non-capital teams were invited to compete in the first national championship.
Its sponsored name is Copa Movistar (English: Movistar Cup) because of its main sponsor, the local cable television provider Movistar. 16 teams participate in the division. The league operates a system of promotion and relegation system at the end of the season with the Segunda División and the Copa Perú. Seasons run from February to December with teams playing 44 games each. The league is organized by the Sports Association of Professional Football.
The 2014 Torneo Descentralizado de Fútbol Profesional (known as the 2014 Copa Movistar for sponsorship reasons) is the 98th season of the highest division of Peruvian football. A total of 16 teams are competing in the tournament. The Torneo Descentralizado began on June 7 and is scheduled to end in December 2014.
The season is divided into 3 stages. The first two stages are two smaller Apertura and Clausura tournaments of 15 games each. Each team will play all other teams once during the Apertura tournament and during the Clausura tournament in a reversed order for a total of 30 matches each. In the third stage the championship is contested in a two-legged Play-off. The two teams ranked first at the end of the Apertura and Clausura tournaments will move on to the next round as long as they finish within the top eight teams in the aggregate table. The Play-off finalists qualify for the Copa Libertadores second stage. The remaining international competition berths are determined by the season aggregate table. Bonus points are awarded to two teams based on the performance of their reserve teams in the 2014 Torneo de Promoción y Reserva at the end of the tournament. The two teams with the least amount of points in the aggregate table at the end of the tournament will be relegated.
